Being photographed smashing a Han Dynasty vase...holding up a middle finger to the Forbidden City in Beijing...co-designing, and then disowning in protest against the Government, the “Bird’s Nest” stadium for the Beijing Olympics...investigating the deaths of thousands of schoolchildren after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake...are just a few of the artworks and public acts that have brought Chinese artist and dissident Ai WeiWei to prominence around the world in recent years. Director Alison Klayman is given intimate access to Ai's life, his work and his increasingly fraught relations with the Chinese authorities, providing a fascinating portrait of one of the most compelling international figures of our times.
